CST 300 - Major ProSeminar - Week 6

Week 6 - Learning Journal Post

Part I: Help Your Teammates to Develop Capstone Ideas

This week, my group members and I brainstormed some possible capstone project ideas for the future. One potential project is in cybersecurity. Perhaps we could develop new software and integrate it into the applications we use daily. Additionally, we considered exploring AI-related projects, as now is an opportune time to delve into the AI field. It's possible we could incorporate AI into the cybersecurity project. Currently, we have another project lined up for the next two weeks: creating two videos about augmented reality. The first video will be a professional presentation aimed at our classmates and professors, allowing us to delve deeper into the topic. The second video will be simplified for elementary school students. I believe that working on this assignment will inspire more ideas for our future capstone project.

Part II: Keep Up With Your Learning Journal

What I learned from this week’s activities was really important. Professor Tao went over what companies are looking for in new graduates. I think this is really important for us to know because as students, we have no clue how the corporate world will be after we graduate. Professor Tao mentioned that one of the best skills that we can currently work on is our communication skills. It does not matter if we are the best programmers if we do not know how to properly communicate with our team and clients. Another important skill is leadership. We have to take the initiative to try new things and learn. If we are hired to do a specific job, we should not be afraid to undertake other tasks and help our teammates. The video “Cracking the Code Interview” was also a good resource; the presenter goes into detail about how to be successful during job interviews. Also, the resources on how to improve our resume and cover letter were really helpful. Finally, we also saw a preview of CST-338 Software Design class, which is basically learning the fundamental concepts to develop large-scale software. After carefully reviewing the syllabus, I think it is going to be a challenging class. I will need to review Java before the class starts in order to get a decent grade.

Modules 8 & 9 - Collaboration (by OLI)

For this week’s OLI, we learned more about how to manage conflict within our team. We watched some videos and answered questions about the lessons from these videos. The videos demonstrated how we should communicate with our teammates. When conversing with them, we should give our full attention and refrain from using our cell phones. It's also crucial to allow them to speak and offer any suggestions we may have at the end. Listening to our teammates is equally important, as it helps them feel heard. I believe that this week’s activities in OLI have better prepared us to build more effective teams, enabling us to apply these concepts when working in the corporate world.
