CST 300 - Major ProSeminar - Week 5

Modules 6 & 7 - Collaboration (by OLI)

This week in OLI, I learned more about conflict management, learning to approach conflicts strategically. Evaluating the value of relationships and considering the long-term impact on oneself were emphasized as crucial factors in conflict resolution. The importance of assessing whether the conflict is worth investing energy into and determining the most effective approach.

One notable lesson involved identifying and addressing an escalating conflict. I observed a conflict unfolding from the beginning, characterized by raised voices and apparent irritation. However, as the situation unfolded, it became clear that a simple issue, a piece of wood under the table, was causing the problem. This highlighted the significance of early intervention and the potential for a straightforward resolution. Conflict can emerge right from the start, especially if someone in the team perceives a problem.

Furthermore, I learned to recognize signs of conflict escalation, such as body language, tones of voice, and communication patterns. These insights provided a comprehensive understanding of conflict dynamics, emphasizing the importance of proactive and strategic approaches in conflict resolution.

Part II: Possible Capstone Ideas

  • First option capstone project: Develop an intelligent personal assistant similar to Siri or Alexa but with a focus on customization and integration with various applications. This could involve natural language processing, machine learning, and integration with APIs to perform tasks like setting reminders, answering questions, or even automating certain actions in different software.

  • Second option capstone project: Create a health and fitness tracking application that goes beyond just counting steps. Maybe add features like personalized workout recommendations and nutritional tracking. Also, I could implement machine learning algorithms to provide personalized insights and recommendations based on user data.

  • Third option capstone project: Develop a cybersecurity platform that focuses on threat detection, prevention, and response. This could include building a system that analyzes network traffic for potential vulnerabilities, employs machine learning for anomaly detection, and integrates with existing cybersecurity tools.

Part III: Keep Up With Your Learning Journal

What I learned from this week's activities is how to handle conflicts within a group. It can be difficult for some people to notice when tensions arise among teammates, so we need to be careful with our words and body language. Avoiding conflicts is an option, but it's also important to speak up if things aren't going well with our team. We also dove deeper into the ethics essay, understanding the need to engage readers rather than just inform them. It's crucial to use ethical frameworks that support arguments for both sides of an ethical problem. As for my future plans, currently, I'm not planning to pursue a graduate degree. I want to jump into the workforce right away, learn as much as I can, and maybe think about school down the road. Recognizing the importance of gaining experience early, I'm aiming to secure an internship this summer, despite the tough job market.
